The iPad is NOT a Locked Down Device…

No, this is not a review. I’m still getting to know the iPad and just for fun my MacBook is giving me grief at the moment, so the review is still coming. But i did feel the need to address one bullshit concern that seems to be floating around the internet and just wont flush – that the iPad is locked down to iTunes purchased content only. From the 18 page Ars Technica iPad review:

The device’s focus—at least at launch—is so squarely on selling you files directly from content providers and developers…

The concern is a fair one, considering the only  official way to get Apps on the device is through the iTunes store, which Apple controls. Its true the Shiniest Apps featured in the Store in this first week are from names like Fox, The BBC, ABC, ESPN, The New York Times etc, and yes, the only place to buy Books for the iPad is through Apple’s iBookstore. But this doesnt mean the device is locked down to those players alone.Right now my iPad is loaded with 8 movies, 4 Episodes of the Simpsons, 2 episodes of South Park, a season of Rescue Me, around 30 Magazines, 20 Comics and Graphic Novels, and 50 odd books on the iBook shelf. Not one item was purchased through evil Apple’s evil iTunes store,  although the excellent Apps I’m using to view, catalogue and store the content was. I’ll leave you to imagine where this content was acquired. So chill the fuck out internet…
