I’ve been using the Netcomm Myzone on Telstra for the last few days. Today I received sims from Vodafone and Three to test as well. Pretty impressed so far, but is it worth the $299?

Jailbreaking My MacBook

I needed some space on my MacBook, so once again I’ve nuked the Windows Bootcamp partition. I realised this was probably the 4th or 5th time I’ve nuked a Windows partition without actually using it. In that sense Bootcamp for Mac is like Jailbreaking for my iPhone, something I do when I’m bored, thinking i’ll use the added functionality, but rarely do.

I need new hobbies.

Microsoft Does Something Really Fucking Cool

Microsoft have teamed up MEAN Magazine to produce “Cinemash,” a series of videos of classic scenes from old movies, that have been “Sweded”. The shorts will appear first on the Zune Marketplace, so about 4 people worldwide can enjoy them, before moving on to the XBOX Marketplace, and leaked to Youtube…

To be fair, Microsoft have done a bunch of cool things with video recently, funding the second season of The Guild as an XBOX Live Exclusive, and even cooler, getting a bunch of Horror film makers to direct comedies. (Again, an XBOX Live Exclusive).

Guy’s Who Get It, Part 3 – Valve

Valve, as makers of Portal, probably the best new game since GTA 3, get automatic access to “the guys who get it” club. Rather than resting on their laurels, they wen’t ahead and proved they are ten times awesome.

Speaking at the Games Business Law Summit in Dallas, Valve’s Jason Holtman addressed game piracy;

The final sacred cow that Holtman took a stab at was the issue of piracy. “There’s a big business feeling that there’s piracy,” he says. But the truth is: “Pirates are underserved customers.”

“When you think about it that way, you think, ‘Oh my gosh, I can do some interesting things and make some interesting money off of it.’”

“We take all of our games day-and-date to Russia,” Holtman says of Valve. “The reason people pirated things in Russia,” he explains, “is because Russians are reading magazines and watching television — they say ‘Man, I want to play that game so bad,’ but the publishers respond ‘you can play that game in six months…maybe.’ “

“We found that our piracy rates dropped off significantly,” Holtman says, explaining that Valve makes sure their games are on the shelves in Moscow and St. Petersberg, in Russian, when they release it to North America and Western Europe.

There are, concludes Holtman, “tons of undiscovered customers,” because publishers look very narrowly at the Western market.

While I can’t see Russia from my house, I am used to waiting months for a legitimate copy of a film/tv show/game to reach Australia while the pirated version is available immediately..

Game And Watch Games for iPhone

This is very cool, ports of old Nintendo Game and Watch titles for the iPhone. (iTunes Link)

Helmet (above) is free, the rest are probably a little to expensive for anyone who’s too young to remember them. ($2.49 AUS)

Hopefully they’ll release a clone of Donkey Kong Jr, which was my favourite Game and Watch title.

Zero Punctuation’s Games of the Year

So, on second thought Yahtzee didn’t really like GTA 4. Can’t agree with the boy here, but I am looking forward to the GTA add on packs that seem to remember the fun of titles like Vice City Stories.

I’ve posted Merlin Mann videos here before, but i always feel i have to justify it. Yeah, its not really film related, but in my defense:

a) This was never meant to be a film only blog – it just kinda evolved into it.

b) Merlin’s advice is perfect for people wanting to find the time outside of their 9 to 5 to focus on creative pursuits.

c) Bite me.
